The UK Practical Driving Test

The practical driving test is administered by the DVSA at around 300 test centres across Great Britain. Understanding the format helps candidates prepare more effectively.

Test Fees

The practical test fee is £62 on weekdays and £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. The theory test costs £23. Rescheduling with fewer than three clear working days notice forfeits the fee.

Test Structure

  • Two "show me / tell me" vehicle safety questions at the start
  • Around 20 minutes of independent driving (following sat-nav or road signs)
  • One manoeuvre: parallel park, pull up on the right and reverse, or bay park
  • General driving assessed throughout

Up to 15 minor faults are permitted. One serious or dangerous fault fails the test immediately.

Pass Rates

The national first-time pass rate is approximately 48 to 51%. Rural test centres often post rates above 65%; inner London centres can sit below 40%. Pass rates on second attempts run around 55 to 60%.

Most Common Failure Reasons

  • Junctions: not checking adequately before emerging
  • Mirrors: not checking before changing speed or direction
  • Steering control: erratic or coarse inputs
  • Right turns: cutting the corner

Test Day Advice

Arrive at least ten minutes early. Bring your photocard driving licence. Drive as you would in a lesson. A single minor fault early in the test does not doom the result — many candidates pick up a fault early and then pass comfortably. Examiners follow a structured assessment framework and are not looking for reasons to fail candidates.
